The cold staining was compared with Ziehl-Neelsen (Z-N) method for detection of acid fast bacilli (AFB) in sputum in 1500 sputum smears. In cold staining method 72.1% cases were reported positive for AFB and 27.9% negative, while in Z-N method 75% were reported positive and 25% negative and the difference was not statistically significant (P>0.05).
